Sometimes it is hard to believe how far we have truly come in terms of technology. For example, computers are everywhere in your home on your desk. You’re using one right now. Today Logitech announced that they have produced their one billionth mouse. That proves two things, one: people love mice. Two, more desks need mousetraps.

The mouse is not just a pointing device, it’s a gaming tool that allows PC gamers the kind of precision that console gamers only dream of. Congratulations go out to Logitech on their fantastic accomplishment. You’ve helped make the gaming world a better place.

It was recently rumored that Mirror’s Edge for the PC will be coming out sometime in January. We now have more specific information on the release date. In a press release EA said that the PC version of the game would be released January 13, 2009 in the United States and would hit other markets on January 16. the PC version will be almost identical to the console version.

However it will have a few minor differences. It will include Nvidia’s PhysX , game physics, which will allow for higher interactive situations. in the meantime, there are some 2-D flash games available on the PC. Or you can just go out and play the game on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation three if you have either of those systems. Also, there will be some downloadable content made available in January in the form of some mission-based time trial levels. While this game’s reviews were office charts. This could be a fun addition to anyone’s library, especially if you are a PC gamer and don’t console.

Things Are not going well in the land of NCSoft. It was recently announced that Tabula Rasa is shutting down in February 2009. For fans of the game this is not good news and for NCSoft this is yet another blow to their model of building interesting, yet ultimately niche games in the MMO RPG space. Years ago when this game was first announced I thought it looked very interesting, but by the time it finally launched it looked like yet another MMO. Now here we are not too much later in the game is already being handed an early death.

As a gamer I have mixed feelings about the situation. On one hand I like seeing innovation and interesting ideas being pushed out, especially in the RPG space. However, it seems that the only thing that works in MMO RPG are World of Warcraft clones. Of course, you could argue that World of Warcraft sells was really just an ever quest clone done much better. On the other hand, everything I read said that this game is mediocre. What we all should take away from this is that mediocre games don’t sell. Developers would do well to stop making mediocre games and trying to sell them to the gaming public. It just doesn’t work.

In the next major patch for the game Age of Conan, the developer, Funcom is going to include DirectX 10 upgrades to the graphics engine. this has been planned for a long time, but I don’t see why so much focus is being put on graphical features of the game in this genre. Already, the game has graphics well above those of the industry leader World of Warcraft, so it seems a bit unnecessary to be putting their focus in that area. maybe the developer thinks they can woo gamers with fancy lighting and bump mapping, but it seems that the market has spoken and it’s about a game experience not game graphics.

If MMO RPG developers continue to try and best Blizzard with shinier versions of the same tired, broken experience, they are doomed to fail. Whatever happened to innovation in this industry? The license for this game is fantastic and they could be doing so much for it, but a graphical update for a game that Artie looks fine? It seems like a waste of time and precious resources.

My guess is that gamers will quickly move on to either World of Warcraft, Warhammer, or Fallout 3. That seems to be the trend. Either gamers want a richer experience like they get in Fallout 3, a different experience that solves some of the flaws of World of Warcraft in Warhammer, or maybe they just want more of the same but with new content in the latest expansion of World of Warcraft. either way it’s not good for Age of Conan, that’s for sure.

It’s hard to say that this announcement is any kind of surprise, especially given the plummeting stock price of Google and the rest of the market it only makes sense that certain “experiments” would end up being canned. Google is shutting down their virtual world known as Lively. It is one of those sort of obvious announcements that seemed destined to be made almost as soon as the software was announced back in July.

When this launched originally, it wasn’t really a competitor to Second Life as much as it was just a graphical chat room client that created an interesting 3-D world for you to chat inside. I never really understood why people would want to be there chatting in a little virtual world, but then again companies like Sony are working hard to create what amounts to the exact same thing so clearly we haven’t seen the last of these fancy chat rooms. What I think we can all take away from this is that a chat room is still a chat room and putting fancy avatars inside it doesn’t make it any more interesting. People still just want to chat. Last time I checked there were about 1 million different ways you could do that on the Internet so adding one more chat client to the pile seems like kind of the waste.

Nice try Google but it again to the day I think it makes more sense to make a game be a game and a chat client via chat client and don’t try and blur the line unless the game meets chat or the chat needs a game. better luck next time Google.

Good news on the Prince of Persia front. Apparently, Ubisoft has finished their latest Prince of Persia game and has finally announced a release date for the PC version of the game.PC owners will only have to wait an extra week until December 9 for the game to release. Also, they have announced that there will be an Assassin’s Creed character skin available for the console versions. I guess that means there’s only a couple weeks to wait before yet another fantastic game launches. This has got to be one of the most ridiculous Christmas seasons ever in terms of game releases. Last year was big with the launch of Halo 3, but this year seems to be even bigger still. Got any money left in your wallet because I don’t.

To update your game you can use the Stardock Impulse client. A lot of great new features made it into this patch such as graphical improvements, new multiplayer technology, UI changes, and game balance improvements.

Also, pre-orders are now being taken for the Entrenchment micro-expansion for the game. It is being priced at $9.99. The pre-order will also enable you to try out the expansion in beta form before the actual release date, which is a nice perk. As usual, Stardock delivers fantastically to its customers.

Not exactly sure how this qualifies as news since after all this was a pretty obvious expectation that Blizzard would sell millions of copies of Wrath of The Lich King right away, but it’s still pretty cool anyhow. As the title of this post implies, Blizzard sold 2.8 million copies of the latest World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King… in one day. Granted, they do have over 11 million subscribers, but the fact remains that 2.8 million games sold in one day is a ridiculous number.

To put that into perspective the last expansion pack Burning Crusade sold 3.5 3 million copies in its first month. This time around some people expect the new expansion to sell over 5 million copies in its first month. Once again these are astonishing numbers but not exactly surprising ones. Running World of Warcraft seems to be a license to print money and the developer can do no wrong at this point.

Ironically, I stopped playing this game just before the expansion in spend a lot of time playing Fallout 3. Clearly I’m in the minority and from what I’ve heard once again Blizzard has delivered a fantastic expansion to an already fantastic game. Even still, I’m absolutely happy with leaving WoW for greener pastures. Of course that won’t stop them from continuing to sell huge amounts of games and I would imagine that this time next year the total subscriber base might even hit 15 million.

Just in case you have any money left to spend on yet another fantastic game released this holiday season, Activision has now made Call of Duty: World at War available for download on Steam. Like you needed yet another reason to spend money, but this game is getting pretty decent reviews. Personally, if you’re wanting the Call of Duty experience, you would probably do well to just buy last year’s instant classic Call of Duty 4. However, this game looks pretty decent too. Of course, it’s also available on nearly every other platform known to man, so they absolutely should be on Steam as well.

It will be interesting to see how this game fares against the other fantastic game releases in the last month also available such as Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, and Left 4 Dead. I’m still absolutely 100% addicted to Fallout 3, so I’ll probably be playing catch-up all the way until this spring. Joy.

It’s been a long boring track for the game Huxley to finally make it to store shelves and it sounds like it’s going to be even longer. It is unfortunate that this game doesn’t seem to be close to making it into store shelves and is perilously close to becoming completely irrelevant. When it was first announced the game sounded interesting, but as time has moved on it seems that gamers are likely to move on as well. Sure the idea of a MMOFPS is interesting, it seems that now that FPS games have the ability to have extremely large matches of up to 60 people, it becomes hard to argue that this game is necessary or interesting.

If you want a great game that has a fascinating and interesting single player experience there are absolutely tons of great games available. I could name them but that would take way too long. So, this game isn’t going to make it out this year but even if it had I don’t think you would’ve had a very good launch against games such as World of Warcraft and Warhammer. It’s really too bad because this game looks quite interesting at one point.

In the past few months the new digital download service GoG.com has got a lot of press for being a service that focuses not on new games, but rather on older games that don’t get the attention of most digital download markets. It’s a cool service that offers a lot of things that gamers want. Of course one thing all gamers want his great games. To that end, they have signed the Unreal franchise to distribute some of the older games. The games include Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition both are available for download and purchase now for $9.99. Soon, Unreal II: The Awakening Special Edition and Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor’s Choice Edition will also be added. this is great news for what seems to be turning into an absolutely fantastic service.

In case you haven’t noticed we are absolutely crazy about the Steam platform around here. So, when we hear that a top shelf games such as Grand Theft Auto IV is coming to Steam, we tend to get a bit excited. Anytime minute we can get one of the absolute best games of the year in the best digital format possible that is great news for the entire gaming community.

This year has really been a breakout year for Steam. Granted, there have always been the great Valve games released on Steam, but this year it seems like a lot more companies are putting their absolute best games on Steam. This says to me that steam is here to stay and that digital distribution is also here to stay. That is great news for everyone involved because if you experience losing a CD or trying to reinstall without the proper serial number or even just a scratched disk, you understand how absolutely frustrating physical media can be.

Kudos to both violent arrest of the game industry for making digital downloads a reality in a way that is not as painful or ridiculous as they could have tried to be.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 10 years, you’ve probably had a chance to play Half-Life. But on the off chance that you haven’t, Valve is offering the game for just $.98. This is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Half-Life. The deal goes until Friday at noon. of course if you haven’t managed to pick up a copy of half-life by now then you probably haven’t bought almost any copy of Half-Life two either since Valve has done their best to include half-life and the remake of Half-Life and the source engine known as Half-Life: Source in just about every bundle they could think of since they launched their Steam platform.

What’s really neat about all this is that without Half-Life we wouldn’t have so many things that we take for granted now such as the Steam platform, Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead, Half Life 2, Portal, and probably some other games I’m not even thinking of. It’s really quite astonishing what one small game built by a few former Microsoft employees has become in this gaming industry that we have today. One has to admire the company for what they have accomplished in only 10 short years and it makes you think and wonder what they can accomplish in 10 more.

As part of the release of Left 4 Dead, Valve is offering a pretty sweet deal. If you buy three copies of the game you get one free essentially. Since the game is designed for cooperative play this makes a lot of sense. Also since you can gift games on steam it makes it entirely possible that three people could go together and buy it on one account and then give them back to the other accounts.

If nothing else this shows that valve is absolutely committed to the idea of cooperative play on the PC platform. Since consoles have a much easier time of doing a whopper of online play via the services such as Xbox Livethose games tend to have intelligent cooperative play built-in as almost a standard feature anymore. For example, Halo 3 had fantastic cooperative play that work through the entire campaign. In fact it even worked over the Internet which proves that online co-op or to play can work and a game like left for dead is absolutely perfectly suited for cooperative play. It’s actually designed around it.

I’ve even been reading that the game’s single player is not nearly as good as the cooperative play in the cooperative play is how was actually designed and intended to be played. Thus, Valve offering this deal is not only brilliant but perhaps even necessary to the future of PC gaming as a platform that can compete favorably with console gaming.
