Wrath of the Lich King Sells 2.8 Million on Day 1

Not exactly sure how this qualifies as news since after all this was a pretty obvious expectation that Blizzard would sell millions of copies of Wrath of The Lich King right away, but it’s still pretty cool anyhow. As the title of this post implies, Blizzard sold 2.8 million copies of the latest World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King… in one day. Granted, they do have over 11 million subscribers, but the fact remains that 2.8 million games sold in one day is a ridiculous number. (more…)

Tabula Rasa Shutting Down February 2009

Things Are not going well in the land of NCSoft. It was recently announced that Tabula Rasa is shutting down in February 2009. For fans of the game this is not good news and for NCSoft this is yet another blow to their model of building interesting, yet ultimately niche games in the MMO RPG space. Years ago when this game was first announced I thought it looked very interesting, but by the time it finally launched it looked like yet another MMO. Now here we are not too much later in the game is already being handed an early death. (more…)

DirectX 10 Age of Conan Upgrade Coming Soon

In the next major patch for the game Age of Conan, the developer, Funcom is going to include DirectX 10 upgrades to the graphics engine. this has been planned for a long time, but I don’t see why so much focus is being put on graphical features of the game in this genre. Already, the game has graphics well above those of the industry leader World of Warcraft, so it seems a bit unnecessary to be putting their focus in that area. maybe the developer thinks they can woo gamers with fancy lighting and bump mapping, but it seems that the market has spoken and it’s about a game experience not game graphics. Google Shutting Down Lively Virtual World

It’s hard to say that this announcement is any kind of surprise, especially given the plummeting stock price of Google and the rest of the market it only makes sense that certain “experiments” would end up being canned. Google is shutting down their virtual world known as Lively. It is one of those sort of obvious announcements that seemed destined to be made almost as soon as the software was announced back in July. (more…)

Prince of Persia Goes Gold

Good news on the Prince of Persia front. Apparently, Ubisoft has finished their latest Prince of Persia game and has finally announced a release date for the PC version of the game.PC owners will only have to wait an extra week until December 9 for the game to release. Also, they have announced that there will be an Assassin’s Creed character skin available for the console versions. I guess that means there’s only a couple weeks to wait before yet another fantastic game launches. This has got to be one of the most ridiculous Christmas seasons ever in terms of game releases. Last year was big with the launch of Halo 3, but this year seems to be even bigger still. Got any money left in your wallet because I don’t.

Call of Duty: World at War Now On Steam

Just in case you have any money left to spend on yet another fantastic game released this holiday season, Activision has now made Call of Duty: World at War available for download on Steam. Like you needed yet another reason to spend money, but this game is getting pretty decent reviews. Personally, if you’re wanting the Call of Duty experience, you would probably do well to just buy last year’s instant classic Call of Duty 4. However, this game looks pretty decent too. Of course, it’s also available on nearly every other platform known to man, so they absolutely should be on Steam as well. (more…)
